Adopt Me

Jolene

Get to know me!

Age: 7 months

Weight: 25lbs

Gender: Female

Cool with: All dogs, people, cats, water sports, adventures

Not cool with: Homebodies

Intake: 05/08/2025

My story: At just 8 weeks old, Jolene and her two siblings were found in a dumpster. Thrown away like trash. AZ Humane reached out to see if we had space. We don't usually take puppies-but Jolene was different.

She has hydrocephalus—a buildup of fluid on the brain that gives the skull a dome-shaped appearance. She weighed just 2.6 lbs when we got her. Thankfully, Jolene's case is mild.

Our neurologist confirmed she has no neurological symptoms, and said how she presents at 6 months will likely be how she stays long-term. She's currently 7 months old and bouncing around like any healthy puppy.

If anything changes later, we'll step in to cover the cost of an MRI-even post-adoption. That's in writing.

Jolene is adoptable because she has a clean bill of health, a plan, and a backup plan. Always.

The only thing unusual about her now? Her size.

She's teeny-just under 25 lbs at 7 months-and looks like a mini pony galloping around.

She's a personal favorite. She's spunky, smart and calculating. She would make the best tiny adventure partner. She makes eye contact that'll stop you in your tracks, and she lives for the water!

Jolene is an absolute dime piece.

Utah

Get to know me!

Age: 4 yrs

Weight: 50lbs

Gender: Male

Breed: 100% staffy

Cool with: Dogs, cats, people, off leash hikes, couch time

Not cool with: Yelling , fighting, young kids, chaos

Intake: 06/03/2025

My story: Utah came from the streets of Phoenix, where he endured what appeared to be injuries from an attack from another dog.

With a rough start, he held no grudges! Utah is a friend to all! He does great with dogs, and is the first to back away if another dog is being too intense. He’s got a tough looking exterior, but is a softy at heart.

Utah was built for adventures! He’s off leash trained, and knows all basic obedience. He’s a compact little guy that is an easy fit for a weekend adventure, or a spot next to you on the couch for movie night!

He is a sensitive little boy with a deep soul. Utahs perfect home would be a family that is active and outgoing. Yelling and loud voices really make him nervous. While he’s an active guy, someone with calm energy is going to be his  best fit.

Adopt Me

Britney

Get to know me!

Age: ~3 yrs

Weight: 12 lbs

Gender: Female

Cool with: Dogs, people, cats, getting attention

Not cool with: Being carried, being ignored

Intake: 02/03/2025

My story: If you are looking for a showstopper, personality PLUS, attention seeker… Britney is your girl :)

She was surrendered due to being paralyzed, which almost cost her, her life. We were able to snag her before she was set to be euthanized!

And what a WIN!!! Britney is an easy, outgoing, playful little dog, that has so much joy to spread!

Being paralyzed, she needs help urinating, which means 3-4 times a day we express her bladder. This is very easy to do, as long as physically you are able to bend down to the ground to reach her.  Britney can poop on her own, and she will let you know when she needs to go. However, because she’s paralyzed, we absolutely give her a free pass if she poops in the house. It’s simple to pick up and toss, because she eats a very clean diet! No mushy poops over here!

Britney can also move around very well in her wheel chair. However when at home, she prefers to move without it, and has recently began “spinal walking” - this happens when the muscles and nerve endings still fire, even tho the nuero pathways from the legs to the brain are no longer intact. Britney’s back legs are getting stronger everyday, and she’s doing a lot of “spinal walking” without her wheel chair.

She will likely need her wheel chair for the remainder of her life- but short walks in the yard and at home without it are her favorite!

Britney has a very fun, young play style, and would do great with another young small dog that likes to play!! We learned as soon as we got her that being picked up made her a little uneasy(she most likely was never picked up in her previous home)but she LOVES to cuddle up on your lap when you are sitting down! She tends to run a little warm, so nighttime cuddles aren’t her thing, but she’d love to sleep close by!

Top things to consider if you’re interested in adopting Britney:

  1. Are you willing and able to express her bladder 3-4 times a day?

  2. If accidental poops happen, will you be willing to deal with this?

  3. Are you willing and able to wrap her feet every few days? Because she doesn’t fully walk on her own, when she’s not in her chair, her little back legs can and will drag behind her(especially when she picks up speed!)drag wounds can happen very quickly and can be difficult to allow to heal if you aren’t on top of it. For this reason, we use vetmed wrap, to effortlessly wrap her back legs about once a week.

  4. Are you willing to continue her 3 liquid supplements that go in her food once a day to help keep UTI’s away?

If these are an easy “yes” for you, or you’d be willing to learn Britney’s needs and incorporate them into your life, then apply to adopt today!

Adopt Me

Jerry

Get to know me!

Age: ~3 yrs

Weight: 42lbs

Gender: male

Cool with: dogs, people, off leash hikes, swimming at the lake

Not cool with: people with no sense of humor, cats

Intake: 10/13/2023

My story: Jerry was found at 7 months old, dragging his body thru a field in Texas where he had been dumped. X rays showed a small bullet lodged in his spine. A good Sam took him in, and for the next week, figured out how to get him to a “special needs rescue” here in Arizona.

Unfortunately, the special needs rescue, was a fraud. She hoarded Jerry and 54 other dogs in a tiny house, leaving them locked in kennels with no meds, no water, no wheel chairs…

The Chandler55 case was horrific. When the dogs were finally released back to their original rescues, Jerry found himself needing a lifeline, and we couldn’t say yes fast enough!

Jerry has been with us for 2 years, learning all the ins and outs of what the good life looks and feels like! As the founder of the organization I made it my personal mission to give Jerry a 2 year window with us before we made him available for adoption, as I’ve been his personal physical therapist and I wanted to see if we could get him walking again.

Jerry has gotten stronger since he’s been with us, and his back legs will take steps, and he can do a small amount of what’s called “spinal walking” - however he will always need his wheel chair for full mobility.

If you could see the smile on his face when he does spin outs on our property, you wouldn’t worry about if he ever walked again. He’s so damn happy every moment of every day!

Jerry can poop on his own, but needs his bladder expressed 3-4 times a day. When we express his bladder, we also take advantage of “pooping him” so he stays on schedule and it reduces the chance of any poop accidents in the house. This is a very simple technique that takes about 1 minute, and makes everyone’s life so much better!

Jerry is great with other dogs, but slow to warm up to people. He reads energy very closely, and isn’t an immediate fan of everyone. But if he loves you, you’re his favorite for life- everyone else, he’ll get there.

He’s off leash trained and LOVES to go on adventure hikes!!! He’s got a good amount of prey drive and would do best in a home with no cats.

Jerry is great with other dogs, cautious with new people, and loyal for life once he trusts you. H! Off-leash trained, adventure-ready, and best in a cat-free home.

Before applying, things to consider:

  • Can you express his bladder 4x a day?

  • Learn and use the quick poop technique?

  • Get him in/out of his wheelchair for outdoor time?

  • Wrap his feet every few days to prevent drag wounds?

  • Add his 3 liquid supplements to his food  daily for UTI prevention?

If yes — Jerry might be your guy!!

Freddie

Get to know me!

Age: ~8 yrs

Weight: 60lbs

Gender: Male

Cool with: Dogs, people, stuffed toys, long walks

Not cool with: cats

Intake: 02/23/2020

My story: Freddie is Handover Rover's longest resident and is dying to meet his forever family!

At around 7 years old, Freddie is kind, playful, and has the best mushy muzzle around. He does great with other dogs! No cats.

He has a history of leash reactivity to cats so his new owner must be willing to learn the very simple training and boundaries we've implemented with him, so the behavior doesn't return.

Outside of that, Freddie an extremely balanced dog. He reads other dogs' energy well, and he LOVES everyone he meets!

Adopt Me

Scarlett

Get to know me!

Age: ~13 yrs

Weight: 65lbs

Gender: Female

Cool with: Large male dog, people, rolling on grass, snacks

Not cool with: being hungry, cats, small or female dogs

Intake: 01/15/2024

My story: 12 year old Scarlett was going to be euthanized because her owners girlfriend said she reminded her of his ex wife…

Scarlett is the most adoptable little old lady EVER!!! Now at 13 and about 65lbs, she is looking for someplace to retire. She is currently living with our rescue, but due to the amount of dogs we have, she does not get the time to lounge in the couch like she deserves.

She is everyone's best friend. This girl has never met a stranger! She approaches everyone like she’s known them her entire life. She does great with male dogs on the larger side, 40+lbs!

All she wants to do is lounge around, have a snack, and toss a stuffy around, have another snack, and nap again!

Adopt Me

Gertie

Get to know me!

Age: ~11 yrs

Weight: 14lbs

Gender: Female

Cool with: calm dogs, cats, snacks, slings + backpacks

Not cool with:

Intake: 05/27/2025

My story: Gertie came to us from the Carson shelter where she found herself as a “stray”.

She’s a darling senior gal(around 11 years old), with quite a bit of pep in her step! Gertie does well with other dogs both big and small, but she wouldn’t mind being someone’s one and only adventure pal!

When Gertie came in, we found out she had a heart murmur and just three painful, rotting teeth left. Unfortunately the dental specialist had to remove them all, they were in terrible shape. But that hasn’t slowed her down one bit. She’s on her daily meds for her heart, feeling amazing, and living her best life on her soft-food diet!!

Gertie also does well with the resident cats:)

Gertie’s perfect home would have someone that is retired or primarily works from home. Possibly with 1 or 2 other slower dogs, but also, no dogs would be a fit. She would get to sleep with her owner at night, and go for backpack/sling rides during the cooler weather!! Gertie would love to be a homebody with her person, and still go on the occasional weekend adventure to the beach, or hiking in the mountains!

Not cool with: Young kids, Arguing, Loud noises, being home alone all day

Intake: 02/16/2022

My story: Tater was surrendered to a rural shelter in Mississippi after his owner fell ill and could no longer take care of him. He was dangerously emaciated, but that didn’t slow him down! Tater is a friendly and loving dog who makes it his mission to meet new friends wherever he goes. A total lap dog at heart, he also has a curious nose that could lead him on endless adventures. Tater enjoys cuddling up for TV time just as much as he loves sniffing around outdoors.

Get to know me!

Age: ~3 yrs

Weight: 18lbs

Gender: Male

Cool with: dogs, cats, warms up to people, his shoes, pillow forts

Not cool with: being alone all day, not being treated like a dog

Intake: 02/17/2024

My story: We pulled little Jeffery from a high-kill shelter in CA with 44 minutes to spare after he was found in a storm drain.

This was the 3rd time he had ended up in the shelter. This time, his owners didn't want him back. Jeffery is the life of the party! He is a wildly intelligent dog. He is a big fan of other dogs and cats, that are gentle with him.

His energy is unlike anything we've ever experienced. He's an extraordinary boy. A friend described him as a "new soul" and that connected all the pieces.

He is almost completely deaf and has some vision impairment, more so affecting him at night. Jeffery has a smaller forebrain and cerebellum than most dogs, causing a slight wobble and unsteady gait. Though, he's self-sufficient and can navigate and potty independently!
